International Student's Day

International Student's Day, which takes place on November 17th, is seen as a symbol for the struggle of students all around the world. The date is a way of remembering the Nazi occupation of the Prague University after demonstrations against the killing of the medical student Jan Opletal, the occupation of Czechoslovakia, the execution of nine student leaders, the sending of more than 1200 students to concentration camps, and the closing of all Czech universities and colleges.

More information on Jan Opletal is available on Private Prague Guide and Radio Praha.

"On this day we also remember some subsequent events important for students, such as student resistance in Greece in 1973 and again in Prague in 1989. The International Students Day thus became a symbol of students’ efforts for a democratic society, respect of human rights and a better future for young people.”
