Part 1
Mother's Day, which takes place every year on the second Sunday of
May in many countries around the world, is a day when children honor their
mothers by giving them cards and gifts and having a family gathering. It is
said to be originated hundreds of years ago when the Greeks celebrated an
annual festival dedicated to Rhea, the mother of all Greek gods, and the Romans
celebrated a spring festival called Hillaria dedicated to Cybele, a mother
goddess.

A more modern version of Mother's Day with families bringing
flowers and gifts to their moms dates back to the 1600s in England. Here a Mothering
Sunday was celebrated annually on
the fourth Sunday of Lent to honor motherhood. More information about the
ancient roots and modern history of Mother's Day is available at the History
Channel.
In the United States, Mother's Day was first suggested in 1872 by Julia
Ward Howe, the author of "The Battle Hymn of the Republic". Later
on Anna Jarvis devoted her entire life to have
Mother’s Day declared as a national holiday to fulfill her mother’s dream of
creation a celebration of mothers. The first official Mother’s Day celebration
was held on May 10th, 1908. Later on Anna
Jarvis became completely disappointed with Mother's Day commercialization and
spend the rest of her life trying to end Mother's Day.
In Brazil,
Mother’s Day was introduced by the YMCA of Porto Alegre in May 1918. The date
started to be celebrated on the second Sunday of May, according to a decree
signed in 1932 by President Getúlio Vargas. In 1949, several shops’ owners
released an advertisement campaign to encourage the purchase of gifts to
mothers and the gift-giving habit on Mother's Day has become a big business.
