Valentine’s Day, which takes place on February
14th in the U.S. and most Europe, is a holiday in honor of lovers. Although the history of
Valentine’s Day is obscure, some scholars believe its origin can be traced back
to ancient Roman feast of Lupercalia, a pagan fertility festival celebrated annually
on February 15th. The festival gradually became associated with the
feast day of two Roman martyrs, both named St. Valentine, who lived in the 3rd
century. St. Valentine has traditionally been regarded as
the patron saint of lovers.
