World Leprosy Day

World Leprosy Day, which takes place on the last Sunday in January, is a day when there is an increase of public awareness of leprosy, one of the oldest recorded disease in the world. It was initiated by Raoul Follereau in 1954 and is commemorated every year. Click here to know more about Raoul Follereau.
It is said that this date was chosen to be the World Leprosy Day because it is near to the anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, a man who wanted to eradicate leprosy.
